New Dig on the Block

It’s hard not to get bowled over by youthful enthusiasm, but that’s what was evident when Karan Bhathal describes the new Hyundai HX145CR excavator that had recently landed on their job site.

Having just ticked over 70 hours at the time of our visit, the 14.6-tonne machine is the latest addition to Singh Civil’s small fleet, operating predominately in the south and eastern suburbs of Auckland.

Purchased to prepare sites for the construction arm of the family-run business and external clients, the HX145CR is quickly making its mark on a Pakuranga demolition job.

“My family has been developing properties since 2012 and a few years back decided to set up a civil business so we can have better control of the whole process,” says Karan. “Our workload has expanded from our own projects to now include jobs for clients, so the need for larger and more efficient equipment became a necessity.”

The sharp 20-year-old Karan oversees numerous projects the business undertakes, such as subdivision work and the infill family-business-run housing project currently underway.

“I oversee the whole civil business for the family with autonomous control, but if anything is outside my scope of expertise, I can refer back to my father for advice – we work closely together,” says Karan.

In a full in-house programme, once the demolition is complete, the four building pads will be excavated, footings dug, houses constructed and driveways poured.

“With the amount of work we carry out ourselves, it’s easy to understand why we need the flexibility of our own machinery and that’s where our relationship with Porter Equipment comes in – and why we upgraded to this bigger machine,” says Karan.

Before the arrival of the Hyundai HX145CR, the largest machine in the fleet was a six-tonne excavator, but with the business also taking on the demolition work of their projects, speed, reach and loading height became priorities. The HX145CR’s 8160mm reach at ground level and 6875mm dump height have significantly increased production.

“Our smaller gear is great, but when we’re doing demolition on tight sites like this, to efficiently load our six-wheelers or demo bins, you need something like the 145 [HX145CR] with its power and short tail radius,” says Karan.

“Another advantage for us is that this machine can be carried on a 10-wheeler transporter, so that reduces the site-to-site shift costs.”

Interestingly, when it comes to loading demolition, the operators prefer to use the sturdy digging bucket.

“The excavator was fitted with A2 buckets. The operators prefer using the deep digging bucket instead of a grab-style one,” says Karan. “There is less material dropping on the ground and by using the dozer blade to pick up against, they can maximise the fill of each bucket.”

Measuring 2500mm x 575mm, the dozer blade is one of a number of features the 97kW Hyundai HX145CR has been supplied with to increase work capability and help ensure safety on the job site and security of the machine.

The Advanced Around View Monitoring (AAVM) camera system secures field of vision, allowing operators to easily monitor surroundings in all directions with ten views including 3D bird’s-eye view and 2D/4CH view.

Intelligent Moving Object Detection (IMOD) notifies the operator when people or dangerous objects are detected within five metres.

Machine theft and unauthorised usage can be prevented with Hi MATE. If the machine moves out of the geo-fenced boundary, an alert will be sent.

“We have a great relationship with Porter Equipment,” says Karan. “Our sales rep is excellent to deal with and although we are only one of their customers – nothing is too much of a problem. It feels like they have family values – something that we align with.

“Their support is always close at hand and if there is ever an issue, I know that they will be here quickly and our downtime will be minimal,” he says.

“I have a passion for machinery and cars, so seeing this excavator in our fleet makes me very happy,” says Karan. “It is the all-in-one package and will be part of how we grow and scale our business.”
