October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month - a time to reflect, raise awareness, and support one another. Breast cancer affects countless Kiwi women and their whānau every year, and this month reminds us of the importance of standing together, showing compassion, and celebrating the courage and strength within our communities and our Porter Group team.
This week, we’re spotlighting Janelle Foster, Territory Access Hire Manager in Palmerston North - a driving force whose down-to-earth leadership, commitment to her customers, and passion for people set the tone for everything she does.
Tell us a little about your role at Porter Group – what does a typical day look like for you?
My role is all about removing roadblocks and keeping things moving for construction and maintenance teams on site. Some days that means sorting the right scissor lift or boom to get the job done safely and efficiently. Other days, it’s about showing up with a coffee, a listening ear, and being that trusted partner who’s genuinely there to help.
No two days are the same - which is exactly what I love about it! Sure, there are plenty of phone calls and emails, but most of my time is spent out on the road visiting customers, checking in on sites, and staying tuned in to what’s happening across the region. It’s fast-paced, people-focused, and all about making sure our customers have the right gear, the right support, and the confidence to get the job done right.
What advice would you give to other women pursuing a career in this industry?
Back yourself - seriously. This industry has space for you, your ideas, and your strengths. Don’t wait to “fit in” or know everything before stepping up - just get stuck in, ask questions, and stay curious. The more you learn, the more confident you’ll become.
Also, find your people. Surround yourself with those who support you, challenge you, and cheer you on. Whether it’s a great manager, a mentor, or just someone who understands the early mornings and muddy boots - it makes a huge difference.
And lastly - don’t be afraid to show up as you. This industry thrives on real relationships, real conversations, and real problem-solving. Bring your energy, your perspective, and your voice. We need it.
Who or what has been a source of support or inspiration for you in your career?
Definitely the people around me - those everyday legends who lead by example, keep it real, and show up with integrity no matter how tough things get. I’ve had great managers and teammates who believed in me, challenged me, and gave me space to grow - even when I didn’t have all the answers.
I’m also constantly inspired by our customers. Their drive, pride in their work, and trust in us motivate me to bring my best every day.
And personally, my family has always been my anchor. Their support, encouragement, and honest perspective help keep me grounded and focused.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received in your career?
“Don’t stop being you.” That one’s always stuck with me. It’s easy to feel like you have to tone things down or fit into a certain box - but the truth is, your energy and passion are your superpowers. Let them fuel you each day. People respond to real - and when you show up as yourself, you build better connections, stronger trust, and a career that actually feels like you.
What helps you recharge outside of work?
Getting outdoors is my go-to reset. Whether it’s being out on the farm, hiking high up in the hills, or heading off on a hunt - there’s nothing like fresh air and open space to clear the mind. I also love getting stuck into motorsport projects, whether it’s 4WDing or working on stock cars. Getting hands-on, a bit muddy, and fully in the zone - it’s the perfect way to recharge and keep the passion alive outside of work.
What does Breast Cancer Awareness Month mean to you, in your own words?
For me, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is about leaning in and standing strong with those quietly fighting battles behind closed doors. It’s a time to raise awareness, spark honest conversations, and celebrate the incredible strength and courage of those impacted. Above all, it’s a powerful reminder to show up, speak up, and support each other - loudly and proudly.
