October is a month to reflect, recognise, and rally together. Breast cancer impacts thousands of Kiwi women and their whānau every year - but it also reminds us of the strength, courage, and compassion that define so many of the women within our Porter Group team.
October is a month to reflect, recognise, and rally together. Breast cancer impacts thousands of Kiwi women and their whānau every year - but it also reminds us of the strength, courage, and compassion that define so many of the women within our Porter Group team.
This week, we’re spotlighting Kendra Wilkie, Hire Controller in Gisborne - a true powerhouse whose drive and positivity keep things moving behind the scenes.
Tell us a little about your role at Porter Group – what does a typical day look like for you?
In my role at Porter Group, no two days are the same. A typical day involves coordinating hires, managing customer enquiries, and keeping everything running smoothly behind the scenes. I work closely with both our customers and our team to make sure the equipment is where it needs to be, when it needs to be there. It’s a fast-paced environment that keeps me on my toes - but that’s what I enjoy about it.
What advice would you give to other women pursuing a career in this industry?
My advice would be: back yourself, and don’t be afraid to step into spaces that might feel male-dominated. This industry values hard work, problem-solving, and teamwork - qualities that aren’t defined by gender. Confidence grows with experience, so take every opportunity to learn and challenge yourself.
Who or what has been a source of support or inspiration for you in your career?
I’ve been fortunate to have strong mentors and supportive teammates who have encouraged me along the way. Having people who back you, answer your questions, and celebrate your wins makes a huge difference.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received in your career?
The best advice I’ve received is to “focus on solutions, not problems.” It’s easy to get caught up in what went wrong, but staying solution-focused builds trust and moves things forward.
What helps you recharge outside of work?
I recharge by getting outdoors - hiking, exploring, and chasing new adventures.
What does Breast Cancer Awareness Month mean to you, in your own words?
It’s about support and standing together, honouring the strength of those affected, and keeping conversations about health and wellbeing open.
